8th Conference on Cultural Geragogy – Take care! Cultural geragogy for a new culture of care and nursing

A central concern of cultural geragogy is to develop offerings that specifically appeal to people in vulnerable health situations – for example, an art studio for people with dementia or dance classes for people with reduced mobility. To this end, cooperation with the care sector is essential. However, crises and gaps in care provision have become increasingly apparent in this sector recently, which further jeopardises the cultural participation of older people in need of care. When care is under such pressure, cultural geragogy work appears to be a superfluous addition in some care facilities. Others recognise precisely in this situation how cultural geragogy can contribute to strengthening the well-being and togetherness of those in need of care, carers and relatives.

What do cultural geragogues understand by a successful care culture? How can cultural education in old age contribute to a new culture of care and nursing? What contribution can and does cultural geragogy make to the care system, and where does it draw the line? What tasks do cultural geragogues take on within the framework of “caring communities” in the social sphere?

The conference addresses and discusses the ambivalence of caring for the elderly from an anthropological, socio-political and artistic-cultural geragogical perspective. Workshops will present successful examples of cultural geragogy in practice, encouraging participants to work together to develop a new culture of care. The keynote speech will give social scientist Prof. Dr. Frank Schulz-Nieswandt. He will speak about the concept of care and the development of a new culture of care from an anthropological and socio-political perspective.
